Recently I've been busy painting some larger works in my studio, so haven't posted for a bit. After painting in such a small format the past number of months, it's really a treat to go back to something on a larger scale.

This Tang Dynasty horse is one from the series I painted. Early on in my career I painted real live horses and as a kid spent hours drawing horses and dogs. I always wanted my own horse and have had a lifetime love of all things to do with them, which my Dad passed along to me.

I've had to satisfy myself with sculpting them in paint - this seems to be working for me fine.

This teddy bear belonged to my daughter and now hangs out with a gang of stuffed animals in her baby's bedroom. I must admit, since becoming a grandmother, I'm finding many things to do with babies suddenly very interesting to paint.

Painting dailies allows me to experiment and challenge myself with all the quick starts and finishes that a small format provides. One of the best things about painting these little miniatures is that I can paint anything I want to and have fun with it; Mr Bear was no exception.

One of the great things about taking on a project to paint dailies is that it's a wonderful way to challenge oneself, keep your work fresh and develop as an artist. It's with this pursuit in mind that I begin each new painting. I love to begin paintings and for me, this is the easy part. The challenge is always in finishing the work in such a way that it retains its freshness and doesn't get overworked.

Our neighbour has the most beautiful bounty on their crabapple tree and I could hardly wait to snip a few branches to set up for one of my little paintings. I'd been looking forward to painting these little rosy apples and so was totally sandbagged by the difficulty that was presented.

It was, by virtue of the small format, a very simple concept; no difficulty there. But as I quickly got into the painting I struggled with areas of it, not the least of which was dealing with the speed in which the greenery wilted. In the end, since I worked on it over a few days, I just went with the wilting, curling leaves and tried to make the most of it.

There comes a certain point in every painting where aesthetics trump the concept - or the reality. An artist must always be cognizant of this and be willing to look for possibilities that present themselves along the way, for the beauty of the painting.

In this particular instance, it became increasingly clear that the table top that I'd set up my still life on was competing with my beautifully rosy round apples and sabatoging my painting. Once I'd established this and altered the surface to a more neutral colour, allowing the beautiful apples to be the star of the show, things began to hum again.

When I decided to take on the project of painting dailies again, I was really excited about the prospect of painting each and every vessel and object I've been storing in my studio. I have collected so many lovely vessels over the years because I wanted to paint them.

This is the second time I've selected this particular little vase, with its lovely blue pattern, to be featured in a painting. It's becoming apparent, at this rate, it could take me several years to get through the collection in my studio cupboards.

I've painted "Porcelain and Grapes" in one of my favourite complementary colour themes - orange and blue. I'm sure this diminutive vase will make an appearance again. I find it irresistable.

Early on in my career I frequently painted my children. People would ask me, "Doesn't it bother you to sell paintings of your children?" and I would tell them that it didn't. Well, I have a confession to make. Now that my children are grown, there are so many paintings of them that I would give anything to see again. I must have been an extremely ruthless artist way back when.

This was painted from a photo of my kids that's been knocking around my studio for years. Twenty to be exact. I've always wanted to paint it and now I have.

I remember this beautiful summer day with such clarity and such fondness. While painting, I was absolutely taken back to those wonderful years of my life.

Some Sidenotes:

... in the off chance you might be thinking that I'm still as ruthless as ever, let me just say that this painting could very well be the study for a larger piece. It's right off the easel, partly wet and partly dry. I'll take a proper photo of it once it's varnished.

In deciding to paint something for Daily Paintworks "Paint Your Mug" Challenge, I realized it would be impossible for me to choose a favourite mug. I love vessels and part of the joy each morning is getting to pick a different one from the cupboard.

Perhaps that's why I love painting still life; observing light flowing over all these beautiful surfaces and round plump shapes make my fingers tingle to sculpt them in paint.

I painted this child's mug years ago in a painting called "The Black Sheep?". The mug belonged to my children and I've always thought it has such attitude, perhaps even naughty or non-conforming. I've recently become a grandmother for the first time and that could be the reason this little mug follows so closely on the heels of my teddy bear painting.

I assure you, this mug was a perfect angel while I painted it.

Another auction offering on "Daily Paintworks"

This painting is of the lovely Natasha whom you might recognize since I've painted her numerous times. Each Tuesday morning, for several months, Natasha would come to my studio to sit for me. I always looked forward this morning of companionable conversation, as I explored her wonderfully familiar features with paint and brush.

For me, there is comfort in painting a model again and again. There is an intimacy and thrill of rediscovery as my brush anticipates a familiar plane; a beautiful sparkle or a graceful line.

Natasha donned a lively hat on this particular day that I began this miniature from life...then completed it from a photo much later.

While hustling through the streets of Rome one rainy morning, dodging umbrellas along the sidewalk, I happened to glance over and catch this little grouping at the bus stop. I couldn't resist it....such a wonderful scene but one filled with the flavor of this historical city.

I often find myself "pondering the master" while painting. This tiny ceramic vessel with its lovely windmill pattern has appeared in my work more times than I can count and I never grow tired of painting it. It brings fondly to mind, Rembrandt, and my trip to his home and studio in Amsterdam. A well-squeezed tube of cadmium scarlet paint complements the blue windmill. The copper coffee can, which contains walnut oil to clean my brushes, was just fun to paint.

Another offering for my auction on "Daily Paintworks". Angela is a beautiful model to paint; I think her smile is very reminiscent of the Mona Lisa. As diminutive as this portrait is, it looks surprisingly important in a frame.

I've been busy with a couple of commissions this summer and I'm now looking forward to painting some new little gems for auction on DPW.

My 'daily paintings' will vary in size from 6x6, 6x8 and assorted odd sizes. 2011 WORKSHOP AND CLASS UPDATE

I'm very happy to announce that I'll be teaching workshops, as well as a regular weekly evening class, at The Calgary School of Art beginning this fall, 2011.

My first workshop will be held Saturday, October 15, 2011, 9am - 4:30pm. The cost is $100.

The theme for this workshop will be "Painting the Still Life from Life". Please visit the 'Events/Workshop' link from my website or The Calgary School of Art website for more detailed information, including a supply list (will be added soon).

In addition, I will be teaching a regular weekly evening class at Calgary School of Art on Thursdays, 6-9pm. You will find more information about my class on the CSA website.

This Tang Dynasty horse sculpture and rider was a joy to paint, particularly for the sculptural quality of the paint. I tried to paint it simply and quickly, laying on the brushstrokes and not fiddling with them too much. I love the intensity of this ancient horse's features.

Painting the model from life

This is my painting of "Kerrie", 12x16 which was painted from life in Sarah Kidner's beautiful studio in the mountain town of Canmore, Alberta. (see photos below). Also painting that day were my friends,

Jean Pederson, Liz Wiltzen and Gaye Adams

This painting was painted in a 3 hour session which is pretty quick for me. I feel the painting is a great start and I'm quite happy with it. But, if I want to finish it, I'll have to resort to photos of the model taken at the end of the session, which can never be compared to the real thing - painting from life.

I consider myself to be a 'life painter' meaning that I paint what's real and in front of me. That's easy to do when setting up my still lifes to paint, but the model often cannot sit for the number of hours it takes me to finish a painting. So, when this happens I must resort to using a photo reference to complete it. One of the great things about painting from life though, and what I love about it, is that so much of the visual information stays with me. Even when referencing a photo later, to complete a painting, it's the 'start' which will guide me and bring the model back to life in my mind.

I'm happy with this 'start' and I might consider completing this painting. When doing this, the challenge will be to retain the 'freshness' that is so much in evidence in a painting painted from life.

On the other hand, if I elect not to finish this painting, I will keep it in my studio to look at. Each time I look at the painting it will serve up a myriad of fond memories of the wonderful day spent with my amazing friends, painting from life.

Just spent a couple of glorious days painting the model from life with my fabulous artist friends: Liz Wiltzen, Sarah Kidner, Gaye Adams and Jean Pederson in Sarah's beautiful studio, nestled in Canmore, Alberta.

Jean and I drove from Calgary (45 minutes) and Gaye was visiting from Sorrento, B.C for the week. Unfortunately, snow, fog and icy road conditions at home made it impossible for us to join the group until the last two days of the week. Hard to believe considering we found the mountain town was enjoying spring like conditions.

These women are truly inspirational and I'm so happy to call them my friends. It really doesn't get any better than this.

I've posted my painting from our 3 hour session on the last day, above. The first day was a wiper. Such is life ;)

"Tang Dynasty Prancer"

My father, who passed away this past October at the age of 92 years, passed along his great love of horses to me. As I've mentioned in previous posts, as a young artist horses were the subject of many of my paintings; many of them my Dad's. The hearts of artists and poets throughout the ages have
been captivated by the beauty, power and grace of these wonderful creatures.

My Dad had such a way with them, such a gentle touch; it was apparent to all who knew him. Now, I do not see a horse without thinking of my Dad and the while I paint them, I think of him, as well.

As a still life painter, the Tang Dynasty horse has become a great source of inspiration for me. Within the Tang society (China 618-906AD) the horse played an important role and was revered for their vigor and strength. They symbolized strength and status, as well as reflected on the personality of their owners and the prosperous and powerful Tang Dynasty itself.

Ceramic models of the owner's horse have been found preserved in their tombs. Upon death, many Chinese horsemen were buried with clay horse sculptures and horses on which human figures are mounted, occupy a special place. These would often be found either preceding or following the coffin.

The Tang horse portrayed in my painting "Tang Dynasty Prancer", 12x12, oil on linen, is not an authentic Tang horse but a reproduction which occupies a special place in my studio and which I treasure nonetheless. I've painted a number of them which I'll display in future posts.

I hope you enjoy their elegant, and often dramatic, beauty as much as I enjoy sculpting them with paint. For me, with each brushstroke, the ancient horse comes to life.

I'd like to invite all of you in the area to an upcoming event I'll be showing my work at billed as "Wild Wild West Hollywood Art Show and Celebrity Auction"

This is a charity event to benefit the "Gerry Forbes CJAY 92 Kids Foundation". The evening will include special guest appearances by local professional athletes, film and tv stars including Amber Marshall and Graham Wardle of CBC's "Heartland", Chris Potter of "The Young and the Restless" and "Kung Fu The Legend Continues", to name just a few. My good friend, wildlife artist Glenn Olson , will be the Featured Artist.

The evening's festivities also include a live auction, as well as a silent auction, with mayoralty candidate Craig Burrows as the celebrity auctioneer.

My painting, "Turquoise and Orange" (above), framed, 8x10 inches, oil on linen, retail $850, will be part of the auction with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit the Kids Foundation.

In addition, I will be showing a number of paintings which will be for sale with a percentage of the sale going to the foundation.

And, here is the completed painting. I have just continued to lay on pieces of paint with my larger bristle brush.....more paint, more refining, as I bring the background color in to create the beautiful shadows in the pot's form. In addition, to create space around the pot, I've lightened (made cooler) the surrounding area. You will notice the brushstrokes becoming more impasto in the completed piece, also. I've tried to leave them just as they are. To me, the brushstroke is incredibly beautiful. That's what painting is all about.

"Petite Ochre Pot" - Demo - Step #2

Step 2: I've let the underpainting dry overnight....blocking in the first step (see below) takes about 15 minutes but if I can, I like to work on a dry surface for this stage. Still using the largest bristle brush I can handle on such a diminutive panel, I begin to really have fun...applying paint! Again, I try not to concentrate on drawing, just enjoy the process of laying on pieces of paint. And of course, color.....the intial stage has captured the concept I have in mind...where the light hits the objects and where the shadow creates the space my little pot nestles into. I push and pull my values, in the darker areas keeping the paint thinner, while in the area of light and color, I've concentrated on color as well as paint quality. I love to see the brushstrokes and I try very hard to just lay in a piece of paint and not disturb it too much. At this stage it's inevitable because the little pot is being sculpted with paint. With brushstrokes, I bring the paint tube into focus, as well. Not too much going on with the berry branch as this point, but I have made a start on it....

Step #1 - "Petite Ochre Pot"

For my larger pieces I use oil primed linen but for many of the very small daily paintings, I prepare panels. In this case, I began by first gessoing a panel of hardboard with two coats of acrylic gesso. The gesso was applied with a large flat bristle brush in random strokes - you can see the brushstrokes in evidence. Once this was dry, I toned the panel using a mixture of burnt umber and ultramarine blue with turps to make a greyed tone, rubbing off the excess with paper towelling and then letting it dry overnight. I set up the still-life in my studio under natural north light. Always, a concept forms firmly in my mind and at this time I begin to place the objects into the space using a large bristle filbert brush. I used a mixture of ultramarine and phthalo blues and burnt umber for this and concentrate on massing in the light and shadow, not on drawing.....this step takes just a few minutes to do, especially for such a tiny painting. When I can, I like to let this stage dry before I being to apply color. In this example, I let the paint dry overnight....

"Best Friends", 10x8 - Demonstration

Completed painting

Recently I realized that it would be a lot more efficient to be posting to one blog rather than both the blogs that I presently have in progress. If you've visited my 'demonstration' blog lately you'll see that it's been very sadly neglected. I've also decided it would be fun to re-post the demos here before I totally dismantle it, beginning with 'Best Friends'.

STEP #1

Step 1: I try to approach each painting with a fresh approach in mind and not by formula. So, in this little painting (10x8), I've begun on a white oil primed linen surface, rather than a toned one, which I've stretched myself onto stretcher bars. With a large bristle brush, using my medium of choice, maroger, I block in the lights and darks of my concept not being concerned about drawing at this point, just placing my figures in their space on my canvas. This is done quickly. It's difficult to get coverage on a slippery oil primed surface, but I like this....I keep the darks airy and don't worry about the brushstrokes showing. All of this creates possibilities from which to work with. I let this stage dry overnight and can hardly wait to begin laying in pieces of paint tomorrow!

STEP #2

Step 2: As you can see, I have refined my dark areas. As I mentioned in step 1, it's tough to get coverage on a slippery surface such as oil primed linen, so today I concentrate on creating those dark areas. With a little dry paint now on the canvas, it's easier to work. Also, I begin to lay in color using a larger brush, without worrying about drawing. My aim at this point is to stay with my original concept for this painting. I want to set these little girls into a circle of focus. Everything else in the painting is secondary. This is a lot of stuff in a tiny painting and so my goal is to try to minimize detail in the outer areas of the girls' figures and in so doing, hopefully make this confined space that the girls are in, appear as if it is in a very large space. Does that makes sense? Their faces remain in shadow....this is fun to paint....the mere gesture of these little girls tells the complete story. I am aiming for simplicity and hope to achieve that in the design of light and shadow that I've created. Keeping the distant landscape simple, I use it to add some color and direct the eye to the heads.

STEP #3

Step 3: Continuing to lay in pieces of paint, color as well as non-color, created by bringing the background color into the figures, creating their forms. Their faces are simply pieces of paint created with single, unaltered brushstrokes. I try to lay in the lights in an impasto fashion and not disturb the paint quality. I'm constantly pushing and pulling values...either making areas darker (keeping them thin) or areas brighter or lighter (impasto). This is so much fun!

STEP #4

Step 4: And the whole process continues. I endeavor to not lose sight of my original design and concept. Pushing the lights and de-emphasizing the areas that are unimportant, the area surrounding the girls. The landscape in the background is brightened and the paint quality thicker as I use this area to complete my original concept and design.

STEP #5 - Completed Painting

Painting from life is especially satisfying, particularly painting the figure . Painting the figure has been my passion since I was a little girl ... I've just never been able to as often as I'd like.

It's been wonderful to have Natasha sit for me the past weeks. I look forward to Tuesdays, knowing that she will join me in my studio when I get so engrossed in painting that the time just flies by.

I'd like you to meet Natasha. Natasha is the lovely friend of my daughter Danica, who has graciously agreed to sit for me in my studio one day a week for the past number of weeks. In addition to being a beautiful model, Natasha is great company.

Figurative painting has been a passion for me since I was a little girl drawing all the important people in my life. While I've managed to paint a few portraits and figures each year, in the last few years I've decided to get more serious about it. Since I paint from life, it can sometimes be a bit problematic finding someone willing to sit for me for the hours required to complete a painting. (I have many unfinished paintings in my studio, as a result.) In addition, being so accustomed to painting from life I've found that when using a photo I'm unhappy with the results.

This painting was done from a photo taken of Natasha during a life session and supported by numerous painted studies. I began this small painting with the idea of doing a 1/2 hour quick study from the photo, wiping it clean and beginning again with the same idea. My friend, artist Liz Wiltzen, encouraged me to try this, in order to approach painting from the photo as if I was painting from life. Liz has lots of great ideas and this sounded like a winner.

This particular morning saw me at my studio with this idea in mind. I grabbed a fresh canvas - untoned, gave it a quick wash of burnt umber and ultramarine blue, barely discernible from the photo, and enthusiastically began. Well, I must confess, 1/2 hour turned into an hour and pretty soon into an hour and I was having so much fun that before I knew it, I'd devoted the whole day to this painting. As I told Liz later, it was just too much fun to wipe off as suddenly it felt like I wasn't using a photograph at all. Mission accomplished!

In addition to working from the photo with hopeful results, I was able to paint 'alla prima', attempting to finish things as I went (Alla prima comes from Italian, literally meaning "at once".)

So, the moral of the story is...paint from a photo as if you're painting from life - with gusto, and follow Liz' exercise advice.

Natasha and others will continue to sit for me each week. Truly, painting from life is where progress and growth lies - and that's all that truly matters.

This painting is now complete and I will post a photo of the completed painting in a few days.

I have such an assortment of vases and vessels in my studio - it's a candy store for the still life painter. The great thing about doing these little 'dailies' is having the opportunity to paint anything I want. I've had my eye on this little pitcher but not had the opportunity to do it justice with my brush, until now. The floral pattern has almost worn off over time and many years of handling.

I love painting little round Mac apples! There is just something indescribable about putting pieces of paint on a surface to create such simple beauty.

This was the demo that I painted at my "Painting Dailies" workshop a few weeks ago. I wasn't able to finish it in the few minutes that I did the demonstration but I did go back to it a few days later and this is the end result.

The workshop was a huge success and participants managed to complete as many as 4 'Dailies' in the 2-day-workshop, working from life. I was truly impressed! In addition, everyone learned how to prepare and prime panels for their 'dailies', as well as en plein air painting.

For my recent "Painting Dailies" workshop, I prepared a bunch of panels for the participants and for my own use. This is one of them. I found working on the smooth acrylic primed panel a little different from my linen... a change of surface is always fun!

As a painter of 'chiaroscuro' (light and shadow) I'm enjoying painting these little 'dailies' in a higher key (lighter). It's fun to put the paint on in such an impasto way.

All of these paintings are painted from life and the objects in them are life-size or smaller. Placing the grapes in the vase gives you an idea of the scale.

I bought this tiny little vase at a pottery sale last year and could hardly wait to paint it. I'm sure you'll see it again one day.....

I love painting oranges and I also love painting orange in combination with blue. Both are my favourite colours so I suppose that's a large part of it. For me, it's pretty hard to go wrong with that combination. I'm not sure if this little painting truly qualifies as a 'Daily' (where are those 'Daily Police' anyway?) because of its size, but what the heck. I'm using up some panels that I have in inventory so it works for me.

It's fun to see all the little paintings lined up in my studio. Very satisfying....

I'm flying by the seat of my pants but seem to be getting into a rhythm with my "Dailies". Began this unusual formatted painting but wasn't able to finish it in one day. I'll admit, it was a little ambitious, for me, for a 'daily', but I was so excited to use this little panel, I couldn't resist the challenge.

The past few days our usually bright blue and sunny skies were obliterated by early morning fog that hung around all day long. Still around today and makes for a very gloomy studio for me. I paint from life under the north-lit windows of my studio, so as a result, on gloomy days like these it tends to make the painting day a little shorter. I did manage to put the finishing touches on "Two and A Half Shallots" on the second day, in no time at all.

This 'Daily' is painted on linen mounted on panel. I make the majority of the panels myself, with the exception of the "Panelli" panel I used in my last daily painting. The little panels I make myself are either made from masonite or mdf board which I have cut to size and then apply a few coats of acrylic primer or often I will glue to the surface scraps of my oil primed Belgian linen. I make my larger canvases from scratch using Belgian linen that is primed with oil lead primer, which I do myself. You can see a demo of the process for making oil primed linen on my demonstration blog here as well as demos of dailies I painted a number of years ago.

I should mention that not all the paintings posted to my blogs are 'Dailies'....I also post my gallery paintings, which are larger, on the site as well.

This is my second 'Daily' painting and I have to admit, I'm really enjoying this. I'm also

coming away with a renewed respect and admiration for 'alla prima' painters - painting a painting in 'one go'. My usual approach is a 'direct' one; working without a drawing and with a large brush. But, I like to build my paintings and often work on a dry surface. Painting wet-in-wet until the painting is entirely complete is a new experience for me! I won't lie...it was tough for me. I wanted to leave areas til the next day knowing that I can build on the day's work. It was tiring, knowing that each brush stroke was a final statement.

To add to the excitement I was painting on a new surface. Those that know me know how fussy I am about the surfaces that I paint on, making my own canvases, often from scratch, on oil primed belgian linen. This 'Daily' is painted on a 6 x 8 inch "Panelli" wooden panel. You can see from the photo that it is primed with an acrylic gesso and it has an unusual finish. Much like one would get from a roller when painting a wall. It was unusual, but fun.

I'm hooked on these little paintings! What fun! I've signed it so it's done....no messing with it tomorrow. This is what 'Daily' painting is about.

Recently I've been preparing for my next workshop, "Painting Dailies". While planning the workshop I've experienced a renewed excitement for these miniature masterpieces. Yesterday I could hardly wait to get to my studio to paint a 'Daily' again; it's been awhile. Here is the finished painting, untitled at this point. It is so satisfying to paint these tiny gems... and even more fun to share it with you.

I don't have a formula when painting a 'daily', it really depends on what other pieces I'm working on and how much time I have. When I was regularly painting them several years ago, I aimed at painting one 'Daily' per week while I was working on larger gallery pieces. This seemed to work best for me at the time.

Yesterday I began this one and painted it alla prima (all in one go) in a few hours. Tomorrow I hope to have a new one to post for you.

Artists around the world have been smitten by the 'Daily Painting' bug, inspired by the father of the 'Painting A Day' movement (PAD), American artist, Duane Keiser . There are no rules in daily painting...no daily painting 'police' out there telling you that you must complete a painting today or even this week. But I can't think of a more fun way to rapidly improve skills, create discipline and keep your work fresh.

Typically, 'Dailies' are painting in the following sizes: 6x8, 5x7, 5x5, 6x6 and other odd small sizes.

I'm really looking forward to my 'Dailies' workshop. The date is February 27th and 28th, 2010 and there are still a few spaces open - class size max 6-7 students.

Incredible? Unquestionably! Venice is one of the world's most fabulous cities to experience first hand. We set out early each morning, eager to explore its many treasures. One particular morning, as we left our apartment, we happened upon this enterprising craftsman who had set up his wares outside his own apartment door, just a few doors away. He was busily refurbishing what looked to be an antique, so clearly immersed in the pleasure of his task that he paid us no attention. Just a moment in time... perhaps an ordinary one at that... but one which, for me, so clearly defined the whole experience.

WORKSHOP NEWS

The past three months have flown by in a flurry of creativity! In that time, I've held four weekend workshops in my studio and each session has been a rewarding growth experience for everyone, particularly for me. I'd like to sincerely thank those people who have participated and look forward to seeing you all again.

The next weekend workshop will be January 23rd and 24th, 2010. This workshop will focus on painting "Dailies"... those diminutive paintings which are overtaking artist's studios in a new phenomenon called "Daily Painting". This fast growing group of artists are painting small paintings daily - or weekly - and posting them to a blog for sale. There are as many variations to this theme as there are artists. For example, my own personal venture into this phenomenon was done while painting larger paintings so my goal was to paint one little masterpiece per week and post it to my blog. Many artists sell these paintings on eBay or on their blogs beginning at $100 each. Paintings are painted on panels or canvases in varying sizes such as: 6x8, 5x7, 8x10, 6x6, etc. Some are even smaller, 2x3! The "Dailies" are there for you to explore and only limited by your own imagination.

In addition, participants will learn how to prepare panels for their 'Dailies' - 4 panels will be supplied for the weekend workshop. We will focus on painting small still lifes, discuss setting up a free blog, selling your paintings on eBay or your blog and shipping and marketing your work. There will be a demo, and one-on-one instruction in a very small class size, in my personal studio.

All subjects/objects to paint will be supplied and there will be handouts for reference.

Painting these little "Daily" masterpieces is a wonderful way in which to challenge oneself and develop as an artist, while having fun!

Reach Out and Touch Someone...

The life of an artist can be a fairly solitary one, often by choice as well as necessity. Many hours are spent alone in the studio in the pursuit of knowledge, challenge and the hard work of painting.

However, artists tend to be very good at networking. As a result of my website, blogs, and newsletter, I've come to know and share with artists from many parts of the world. The contact is more often than not a single email with an enquiring artist; but sometimes it's a timely note of support.

Messages can be brief...welcome words of encouragement or notes sharing methods and ideas about the business side of this life. It's all good, in the spirit of friendship, and it makes life as an artist fun, fulfilling and much less isolated.

But it hasn't always been this way.Recently, I reflected on the incredible resources available to today's artist and I realized how decidedly different and complex my life as a working artist has become over the years.

It's barely conceiveable that just a dozen years ago, I couldn't turn on a computer myself, much less operate one, unless one of my children was at home. Today, I have a lovely website and several blogs, all of which I have learned to navigate myself. How did I ever manage all those years ago without these tools?

Looking back to those early years of my two decade plus career, my life as an artist was very simple. It was a world without internet, so unlike this instant world which now lies at our fingertips. But artists have always been networking naturals. It's part of our enquiring, resourceful pyche to seek out like-minded artists, to compare notes on methods and techniques; to search out the workshop of our dreams or the gallery which will become a home to our life's work; to savour words written on a favourite artist's blog or newsletter; to explore what other artists are creating, and more importantly, how they're doing it. The world has very definitely become our oyster.

And so today, while my studio days are still solitary, it is never with feelings of isolation that I view my world. As I prepare my canvases by hand and joyfully put pieces of paint on these surfaces, I remember the artists who have so generously passed along their hard-won knowledge over these wonderful years.

Friendship is merely an email away; companionship an inbox waiting to be opened. Sometimes it's even a surprise in my 'real' mailbox...a Christmas package, filled with incredibly delicious home-made Italian cookies from my Italian artist friend in Omaha.

It's hard to believe that summer is now behind us and a glorious fall has once again arrived in all its splendor. For me, the wonderous colours and earthy smells of cool, crisp fall mornings always elicits memories of the first days back to school. September is also a time for me to regroup, to shake myself free from those lazy days of the summer months and once again reassess my goals, my direction. It's a time to re-focus. To concentrate on learning; that never ending quest to know more and always, to do better.
And so it was with my recent workshop: "Painting the Still Life in Oil, From Life", September 19th and 20th. The participants arrived at my studio with serious intentions of getting down to the business of learning! What an incredible group! Energetic, attentive and eager for the challenge at hand. These artists worked hard and left exhausted, yet very happy and content with themselves.
Thank you to those who attended. The workshop was a rewarding experience for me, as well. I look forward to seeing you again in my studio workshops and to welcoming others for the same exciting challenges!

"Relic Ride and Roses", oil on Belgian linen, 20x24

As a child I would spend hours drawing horses, dogs and people. These were my favourite subjects of all and I never grew tired of them. Many years later, horses were often the subject of my paintings, as were cows, dogs, kittens and the people in my life. Growing up in a rural farm setting in Saskatchewan, it turned out it was natural for me to paint these subjects. My Dad raised a few horses, restored and drove his collection of buggies and he passed along to me his love for the country life and animals. It's been a number of years since I've painted those pastoral scenes of the farm that I loved so much. I am so happy that I did, because the farm is no longer there. Painting this sculpture of a relic horse was a pleasant reminder for me, and while not the real thing, it dropped me into a huge pleasure pool of reminiscences.

Workshops will take place in Bobbi's spacious studio where students will enjoy painting subjects from life under large north-lit windows. In addition to painting demonstrations by the artist and teaching students about painting, Bobbi will share her painting philosophy, the business side of art and life of the professional artist.

ABOUT BOBBI DUNLOP'S 'VISUAL JOURNEY' WORKSHOPS:

All students will require a 'french style' easel for the workshops. Each student will be emailed a supply list and registration form. There will be an additional $20 fee for the model in figurative workshops.

In keeping with Bobbi's philosophy about painting, the student will benefit from each workshop and may use one to build upon another. As the student will learn, subject matter is not an issue, however, elements in painting are continuous, no matter the genre. Therefore, the student will benefit from enrolling in following workshops as the student builds on knowledge learned in Bobbi's previous ones.

PAINTING THE STILL LIFE FROM LIFE, IN OIL

In the still life workshop, Bobbi will take each student through the process of setting up the still life, emphasizing the importance of beginning a painting with a “concept” firmly in mind. Painting in a direct manner, consideration will be given to abstract design, colour, value, edges and more. In particular, students will learn how to 'see' and experience the 'joy'of putting paint on canvas. The artist will demonstrate at the workshop.

PAINTING THE FIGURE FROM LIFE, IN OIL

In this workshop, students will enjoy the process of working with and painting a model, from life. Students will be guided through the process of setting up, lighting and painting the live model, in a direct manner. In addition, all the elements of a strong painting will be emphasized - creating a concept, abstract design, colour, value, edges and more. The student will have the choice of painting the full figure, 3/4 figure or head-and-shoulders. The artist will demonstrate at the workshops. There will be an extra model fee of $20.00 for this workshop.

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a young, self described 'budding, self-taught artist who was born and raised in Calgary" by the name of Trevor Gieske.

Trevor makes hand bound sketch books, often collaborating with another artist in his thoughtful creations. He showed me a beautifully crafted journal he'd made for a Calgary illustrator. On the cover was a stunning illustration by the artist who'd commissioned Trevor to make the journal for her. It contained rag papers that any artist would long to make their mark on. This journal was artfully bound by hand, by Trevor. It was truly remarkable and breathtaking.

I asked Trevor to send me some photos of his books so that I could post them here to show you. This book in the photo is 8"x10" with acrylic painted masonite panels for the cover which conceals 130lb, 25% cotton sheets that have a toothy, rough vellum surface suitable for a variety of mediums. Makes my fingers twitch just thinking about it.

I couldn't help but be impressed with the sensitivity and enthusiasm in which Trevor approaches his art of bookmaking. And the notion that he is keeping a lost art alive wasn't lost on me, either. What occurred to me is that Trevor quite possibly has created the one and only perfect gift for the artist!

A journal that is a work of art in itself, just waiting for inspiration to fill its pages.

Bobbi's Studio

Several years ago, my studio was not only my own workspace, but a thriving environment for my students, as well. With weekly classes and frequent weekend workshops in both oil and watercolour, it was a hustling, bustling space filled with creative energy and a place where many lasting friendships were formed. Five years ago, I set the teaching aside to concentrate more fully on my own work, but I did promise that one day I would come back to teaching, something I have enjoyed immensely.

Well, I'm very happy to report that I will be resuming my oil painting workshop schedule beginning again this fall, 2009. I have many exciting ideas in mind to share - from painting the landscape en plein air to painting the figure -and I'm looking forward to welcoming back many of my former students and to meeting new ones.

In my oil painting workshops you will be painting from life from live models and still lifes, all set up under the beautiful north lit windows of my spacious studio.

Here is the completed painting, "Turkish Urn with Oranges". You can see in this photo that I have, indeed, set the table edge back somewhat and I am happy with this change. There is also more push and pull to finish this painting to my satisfaction.

I'd like to point out, however, that this final photo was taken by professional photographer, Geoff Williams, who has become a genuine friend. I have bragged about him in previous posts, but the photograph he has taken of this painting speaks volumes about his talent as a photographer.

The final touches are being put into place....the little ochre pot now has its handpainted pattern and the windmill pattern is now painted onto the miniature china cup - bringing them both to life. The grapes on the left hand side are set back into the depths where they are merely hinted at.

There is quite a bit of glare on these photos from my north window, unfortunately, on the left side of the canvas. You can also see areas that appear flat where the paint has dried to a dull finish. The painting is coming together but still I am unhappy about the brightness of the table edge so I plan to do something to set it back. A little glaze ought to do the trick.

In this photo, once again, you can see the refinement in all the areas. I like to work all over the canvas as this allows me to see my concept coming together as a whole. It also allows me to see when my ideas are not working and changes need to be made. In addition, I am also often able to see the opportunities which present themselves which will make the painting more beautiful. I love it when this happens! Many years as a watercolourist tuned me in to this philosophy. As all artists who work in this medium know, watercolour is often done by the seat of one's pants. It's a medium in which many accidents are beautiful things! In turn, with oil painting, it's important to be not only open to these possibilities but also on the lookout for them.
I have painted the little medicine bottle on the righthand side, as well as the leaves and the grapes. You can see the grapes on the left hand side now, as well as the greenery behind them. I've also resolved the bottom table edge issue, it would appear.

Again, more paint, more refinement going on. I'm continuing to concentrate on edges, paint quality, my original concept. With each little refinement, however, something needs to change, improve. You can see the patina of the urn becoming more developed and therefore I'm making decisions about just how to best place it into the surrounding space. I've done two things, in repainting the background. I've restated the background colour and also added a darker value to the left side of the urn and resolved the value of the area surrounding the ochre vase. I've also painted the leaves somewhat and at this stage wanted them to be seen as part of the design but not necessarily take over the painting on the left side, detracting from the flow. Everthing is refined a little bit more, including the grapes and the table top - both at the back edge and the lower portion. I'm still not sure at this point how the bottom portion of the table will resolve itself. I've kept it painted very simply in order not to'close myself in' with too much paint, meaning limiting my options. The biggest impact is in painting the miniature china cup which just seems to illuminate the scene...this was my hope so I'm happy about that. This also allowed me to put the burners to the other colour, such as the oranges.

In this stage you can see that the urn has been somewhat more refined with paint. This will be an on-going process throughout the painting. In addition, I have established the value pattern on the little ochre vase on the left hand side of the painting. This, too, was an on-going proposition, as I changed my mind about the lighting of this little gem. At one point, after step one, I set this vase back into the background only to change my mind and repaint it back into the light. It was just far too charming to leave out entirely. I got more paint on just about everything, it would appear, with the exception of the miniature cup. The orange segments have been restated, as has the larger orange itself. These are little stepping stones throughout the painting. Most importantly, though, is that I'm trying to come to terms with the background. This will become a back and forth proposition for me, unfortunately. The reason is that I often 'make up' the backgrounds. In other words, it isn't exactly what I'm looking at on my stand in front of me. Or I just change my mind. It's never straight forward, whatever the case. While I have a concept in mind at the beginning of my painting, there are endless possibilities that present themselves along the journey and I find too many of them irresistable! The beauty of oil painting is that everything can be repainted and one cannot be afraid to make changes. It all comes down to what makes a painting more beautiful. Once I made a statement about the background quality I thought hmmm, what if? And this is how I arrived at the palette knifed surface of the table ledge.I like it so it'll stay as is ... for now ;)

At this stage, as in all stages, decisions are being made about paint quality, edges and colour saturation. You will notice that the darks are smooth and often transparent while the lighter and brighter colours are opaque and often have impasto qualities. The joy and beauty of painting for me is just putting the paint on the canvas....

STEP ONE: Turkish Urn with oranges, 22x26, oil on linen

As mentioned in my original post about this painting, I discovered this Turkish Urn at a market several months ago. In particular, what inspired me to paint the urn was the lovely worn patina, its understated poise and grace, enhanced by the passage of time. With these thoughts firmly in mind, I placed the worn urn on my still life stand.

A still life concept can come together very quickly or it can take hours, even days, to accomplish. This particular concept did not come easy for me. Everything I loved about the urn seemed in contradiction to those objects placed on the table to enhance the beauty of it. Soon I realized that the utilitarian nature of the urn dictated not a still life of delicate objects at all. Simplicity was in order. No frills.

In keeping with the order of simplicity, this painting is built upon a limited palette of colour and non-colour. With the exception of the urn and the miniature cup, it is very much about earthy yellows, orange and green. The vivid orange colour also serves to complement the blues of the urn, emphasizing the delicate miniature cup with its blue painted windmill pattern (my tribute to Rembrandt).

As always, with my studio paintings, I began this painting on an oil primed linen which I'd previously toned using burnt umber and phthalo blue. I should add that I prepare all my surfaces myself. In this case, I've used raw Utrecht Belgian linen which I've prepared by hand - you can see a demo of this on this blog in an earlier post. In addition to the Utrecht, I use Fredrix "Kent", oil primed Belgian Linen and to this surface I add a coat of Williamsburg oil lead primer. The prepared linen is then stretched onto stretcher bars. Once a decision has been made as to the still life concept, I am able to choose a canvas which will best compliment it.

Stage One:

Using a large filbert bristle brush, I began by roughly blocking in the shadow patterns. At this
stage I don't worry about drawing, my aim is to place the objects in the 'space' on the canvas and to develop the design using the shadow structure.

This photo shows the painting a little further along in the initial stages. I've not only blocked in the basic shadow design/concept using my large brush and burnt umber/blue mixture, I've also blocked in the objects with some colour, mainly just to get paint on them. It's always difficult (for me, at least) to get paint coverage on this oil primed linen, in this initial stage, so I'm just concentrating on stating the colour scheme and getting that first coat of paint on. This allows me to make some judgement calls and also make any changes that I might deem necessary, too. I've managed to get a little further along in blocking in the urn. Since this is the largest object in the painting, and pretty much the star of the show, I want to get a feel for the size and value, and just how it fills the space on its own. So far I feel that it's holding its own...no need to haul in a bunch of flowers for support, just yet!

The important thing to note at this stage is that I'm not worried about drawing or detail, I'm using a large bristle brush and just getting a feel for the design - the flow of the light and how it will travel across my canvas. The paint is applied with little concern for smoothness. In fact, I love the quality of the scratchy surface caused by my bristle brush and will try to utilize this wherever I am able, as I go along. I've used my palette knife on the table edge. You'll also note that I have blocked in the basic value of the table top, as well.

Gone Fishin' .....

Ok, so I can't make the claim that fishin' got in the way of my blogging for the past year. Although I personally know of a couple of artist friends whose fly-fishing passions cause lengthy absences from their studios, this hasn't happened to me yet. (Rick Berg, Dave Hodges). Nor can I claim to have been golfing, because I don't do that either. My only obsession is painting and I'm pretty pleased about that.

To give you the reader's digest condensed version of my past year, it was a busy one. Last spring my husband and I travelled to London (not to visit the Queen, necessarily), Paris and Amsterdam. In that incredible journey we took in the London Portrait Museum, the National Gallery, The Louvre, Rembrandt's House and Rijksmuseum. All in the blissful pursuit of Rembrandt.

We also visited Santa Fe, New Mexico a couple of times, the incredible art destination which we love to explore. In August I had the pleasure of having a gallery show at Brandon Michael Fine Art on Canyon Road.

And here I am, back again, eager to resume this business of blogging. I hope to have my newsletter back on track in the coming days, as well. (you can sign up on my website Bobbi Dunlop Fine Art )

Most of you know that for my entire career I've been strictly a studio painter. My workspace is a wonderful, expansive, north-lit studio, in which I paint my still-life paintings, have models sit for me and I paint from life. Recently, however, I've been ceased with the urge to experience en plein air painting. ( *Google Definition for en plein air painting: French for "in the open air," used chiefly to describe paintings that have been executed outdoors, rather than in the studio.)

The photos above were taken recently on one such en plein air adventure. I'm hooked! You'll be hearing more about my en plein air adventures here and I'll post some paintings, too. The successful ones, that is ;0)

So, from this point on, rather than claiming to have gone fishin', it's more likely that I'll be gone paintin'.

"Turkish Urn with Oranges" and Demonstration

This is a photo of my most recent large painting. After discovering this weather worn Turkish urn in a market several months ago, it was simply a matter of time til it won a place of honour in one of my still life paintings. I was looking for a minimalistic concept, in keeping with the functional, utilitarian nature of the urn. No frills. Nothing to take away from its faded, but once beautiful, facade. Toward that end, I used a fairly limited palette. As you can see, it is very much about earthy yellows, oranges and greens. This limited use of colour - or non-colour - serves to enhance the miniature china cup with its lovely blue painted windmill pattern. My small tribute to Rembrandt. I purchased this cup on our trip to Amsterdam last spring, to visit Rembrandt's home and studio, as well as the Rijksmuseum.

Where does the time go? It has been said that ''the older one gets, the faster time passes''. I'll go along with that analogy. Add to the mix a pure joy and love of life - joie de vivre - and the combination throws life into fast forward on overdrive. That's me.

I confess I have been neglecting my journalling duties of late and also haven't been posting new works recently. In fact, the glorious days are getting longer with spring's arrival and with that my hours in the studio are keeping stride.

New Detail photo...."Art Student at the Patheon"

This isn't a new painting, but the photo is new. I thought I'd leave the 'old' one (below) just so that you can use it as a form of comparison.

This new photo, and the complete image below, was taken by my very good friend, photographer Geoff Williams. Normally, I photograph the paintings myself as I go along. Once I have accumulated a number of paintings, Geoff comes around to my studio and photographs them for me. As you can see, the man is amazing....his photographs are incredibly beautiful.

Photographing a painting is not an easy task, but Geoff is a master. So now you know. All the extraordinary photographs on my blog, and my website, are the creations of Geoff....the rest of them are mine.

I haven't posted for quite some time. Besides taking time to celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus, plus enjoying family and friends, I'm now involved in a commissioned painting. I will post it when it's done for you to see.

I was incredibly touched and the baking was incredibly delicious - we love Italian food in our house.

Chris is a huge fan of singer/songwriter, Joni Mitchell, whom we all know and love. Because Joni Mitchell and I are both Canadians, Chris likes to put our names in the same sentence. I will be eternally flattered. However, the bit of trivia that I pointed out to Chris is that I was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and this happens also to be the birthplace of our beloved Joni Mitchell! In fact, Joni was in my oldest brother's grade one class. Small world, isn't it? Alas, Joni was last seen heading due south, a common occurance for many of our Canadian artists. But we continue to hold on to them, in our hearts.

The sun finally peaked through the cloudy skies today and allowed me to photograph this painting for you. We've been experiencing unseasonally cold weather recently, as well as less sun. I am blessed to live in a very sunny part of the world so I was very happy to welcome this light back into my gloomy studio. I've also been working on a companion piece to this one and will hopefully be able to post it soon. Please read the posting below for an explanation of these inspiring art students at the Pantheon in Rome.

Working under the natural north lights in my studio, I am really affected by the overcast periods. But, it's a great time to do other things in my studio. This week, I managed to prepare several sized canvases. A number of canvases were done on my usual Fredrik "Kent" linen, which I give a 3rd coat of Williamsburg oil primer to, and several more were made on Utrecht 74D raw linen which I've just applied rabbit skin glue to. The Pantheon is referred to as the glory of Rome, and its magestic beauty is no less than breathtaking. Some of Italy's most famous kings and artists are buried at the Pantheon, most notably Raphael. I was taken with the collection of art students, focused intently on their sketchbooks, both inside and out. I love to watch people and the young students were particularly irresistable to me. This painting is one of several from that experience. This smaller painting is a work in progress....almost done. Detail above....

Such a simple subject but incredibly irresistable to sculpt with paint. Who would imagine that these two little mac apples would be able to carry a painting with such grace and beauty. And what a joy it was to paint them. This is a subject I will turn to again, I have no doubt.

'Apple Blossoms and Pear' is now complete....it was painted from life with a branch picked from an apple tree, in the spring, and completed only now. The blossoms are now just a memory, and the fruit long perished, so in finishing I really had to rely on my memory and the concept that was so firmly in my mind. Because the painting was completed without the set up in front of me, I left areas in their original, roughly painted state, which I'd grown to like very much. All of the focus and beautiful brushstrokes have been devoted to the pear. Please see the detail of it above, and click on it for a close up look.

This is the first painting completed on my beautiful Utrecht linen which I primed from the raw state and demonstrated in my blog, Dunlop Demonstrations If you click on the images above, this will enlarge it and you might catch a glimpse of the beautiful canvas, peeking through the paint. Preparing my own canvas from scratch and stretching it onto stretcher bars is rather time consuming and most artists don't feel they have the time to do this, nor do they want to. Personally, it is a joy for me and I derive such pleasure from applying brushstrokes of paint onto a canvas knowing that every mark on it is from my own hand. There's just nothing like it, to my mind, and it is well worth the time and love that goes into it. In addition, I feel that I am experiencing a practice that was not optional for the great Old Masters, such as Rembrandt, who personally ground and made his own paints. This painting isn't varnished yet and I will rephotograph it once it is. Varnishing always brings life back into the paint and the painting.

'Girl with Basket' 1981

It's been awhile since I've posted to my website and my blogs. I have been working on several larger pieces and will post the most recent one today. But, more importantly, I wanted to share this painting with you.

'Girl with Basket' is a painting that I did very early in my 'career'. I was 24 or 25 years old at the time I painted it - 1981. This is not my original painting, but a copy, and I'm very sorry, I do not recall who the artist is to give them credit. If anyone knows the artist whose original I copied, please let me know. I hope this artist will take satisfaction in knowing that they served to inspire a very young artist. At the time I painted this, I was dabbling in pastel, pencil and oil. Soon, I discovered watercolor, a love affair which was to sustain me for fifteen years.

My oldest daughter, Danica, and I have just returned from a trip to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This prairie city is my birthplace, where we travelled to visit my beautiful Mom and Dad and my brother, sister and their families. My family has given me immeasurable encouragement and support since I was a very little girl. Their enthusiasm and steadfast encouragement through the years has meant everything to me and has been instrumental in bringing me to this point in my life.

My parent's home is a virtual art gallery of my personal work. My sister, Jacquie, visited me in my studio over the years, and with eagle eye would discover paintings that I'd rejected for one reason or another. This is one of them. Frequently, she'd resurrect paintings destined for the garbage. I must admit, I was never too happy about this at the time, but I am now so grateful that she saw something in my work that I couldn't see. That she had an unconditional appreciation for my work that I didn't have.

When I painted this in 1981, it was during a time that I passionately wanted to be an artist, and was trying very hard to be one. I wasn't too sure how to go about accomplishing this and had no idea yet how tough the road I'd travel was going to be. Self-taught, I had the discipline, to be sure. I had, in my heart, the burning desire and passion. And, I'd always been tremendously adept at flying by the seat of my pants. I guess those were the most important attributes for an artist to possess. Plus, I'm an eternal optimist. In retrospect, knowing what I now know, I'd do it all again, happily. Thankfully, my husband has been the one to support me through this wonderful journey and made it possible for me to follow my heart, while also embracing motherhood. I would wish that all artists out there have someone like him to stand behind them and be their dragon at the door.

After 25 years, this painting has stood up quite well. My sister has treated it lovingly and it has always hung prominently in her beautiful home. After this trip, however, I've brought it home to give it some tender loving care. I've noticed some areas where the paint has chipped and when I painted it, I didn't know anything about varnishing, so the painting has shown some deterioration as a result. Yesterday, I cleaned it, touched up the paint chips and will varnish it soon. It will be good to go for another hundred years, I'm sure.

My daughter got a chuckle out of the left hand of the woman, which is out of proportion. There is also a striking resemblance to myself, which is often the case with portrait painters. It is apparent that I didn't know a great deal about color mixing in those early days and what I did was purely instinctive with my limited knowledge and palette. What is in evidence, however, is the inspiration by a now unknown (to me) painter, and the passion and desire a young artist possessed. All these years later, I have a huge appreciation for this piece, with all its flaws, and I am able to glimpse the eager young artist who painted it.

No longer am I critical of the apparent lack of skill, nor do I remember the struggle and hard work that went into it. Gratefully, I now possess a healthy respect for my old painting; simply, for what it is..... I have become 'friends' with it. And like a good friend, feel an unconditional love.

In May, my husband and I went to Germany to visit our oldest daughter who was completing her degree in Reutlingen. After exploring the beauty of this German city for a few days, the three of us travelled to Venice and to Rome. This was my first trip to Europe and as my husband told me it would, it changed my life and my view of the world forever. For one thing, it certainly has made it a lot smaller. Since then, I have had so much time to reflect upon this wonderful experience. I am hoping to paint from my travels and this is perhaps the first painting of many to come.

While hustling through the streets of Rome one morning, dodging umbrellas along the sidewalk, I happened to glance over and catch this little grouping at the bus stop. I couldn't resist it....such a wonderful scene but one filled with the flavor of this historical city.

Since then, my daughter has returned home and now our youngest daughter has set out to explore this wonderful world of ours, in her own way, too. She just celebrated her 19th birthday in Paris and has tasted the culture and history of England, France, Netherlands and today she's in Berlin. How I wish I was with her....in Paris she saw the beautiful works of Monet and Van Gogh, among others, at the Louvre and also at Musee D'Orsey. Wouldn't you know, she made a special trip to see the Rembrandt exhibit at the Louvre, just for me, and that was the day that particular exhibit was closed! Rembrandt is my favorite artist of all and has filled me with inspiration enough to last a life time.

'This is my studio...."

Today is 'Thanksgiving Day' in Canada....just a reminder to me that I am so thankful for so much in my life. It really couldn't be more perfect with my great friends, my ever supportive family, my chosen profession.

This is a photo of my studio, the place that I spend hour after hour in a pursuit that I love. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about how lucky I am, and thankful to be doing what I love so much.

My studio is my oasis, and visitors often comment on the sense of this when they stand in the space. Often, it looks like a garage sale waiting to happen with all the shelves containing pots and objects that make their way into my paintings. My husband often finds things that have been missing from home. He never knows when he'll see them again!!

My studio is the perfect artist studio. It's attached to a car wash and the space was thoughtfully designed. A flower shop was in the space before I came upon it and I've kept up the original awning which says, "Mayflowers". It used to say "Mayflowers Florists" but I had the 'Florists' part taken down. The space has a high 12'ceiling and beautiful north windows. It also has an east window, but I've covered those with blinds which I close when I'm working, in order to use the single, perfect north light source.

My focus is to paint from life. This is easy to do when painting still life, which comprises most of my work these days. I set up my still-life arrangements under my wonderful northlit windows. When I have a model sit for me, for portrait work, I take photos which I load to my computer to work from later. It's not nearly as rewarding, nor as fun, as painting from life, but my models can't possibly sit for me for the time required. I've found that having the initial hours of painting the model from life, it's truly remarkable how much information stays in the mind and can be recalled later, so the photograph becomes merely a tool.

For a number of years I taught students in this very space. At that time it was full of tables and easels; a busy, thriving workspace with several weekly classes as well as weekend workshops in oils and watercolor. I set the teaching aside about 3 years ago to concentrate more on my own work. To meet so many requests, I plan to offer a workshop schedule at some point in the future.

This past week has been a busy and productive one in my studio. The little 'Rome Bus Stop' study has not been neglected. But, as is often the case, I was held up by wet paint....hope to post it for you soon. In the meantime, I've got a new larger piece, also near completion, that I will post once it's done.

Unfortunately, one pear was hurt in the making of this painting. This is an organic pear and it certainly was delicious. I wonder if it was a happy pear? Our youngest daughter, Lexi, who totally embraces organically grown products, including grain fed and open-ranging cattle and chickens, has really enlightened our family in this area. We always ask her if something is 'happy' before we eat it. Even cookies. It's fair to say that this little pear seemed to be saying 'pick me!, pick me!' in the grocery store. I couldn't resist its little stem sticking up so smartly in the air.

This isn't exactly a new daily painting...OK, in fact, I painted it a few weeks back. But, the photo is new. I know that those hard-core 'daily painters' out there will call this cheating to be posting this painting again, but I couldn't resist doing so. I've just varnished it and it looks wonderful now...again. It's amazing how varnishing, in addition to increasing the longevity of a painting and protecting it, can refresh and put the sparkle back into it. Just like when it's freshly painted and the paint is wet and luscious.

So, that's my reason for posting it again.....that and with all the balls I have in the air these days, with building my new website, managing my blogs, building canvases, taking on a commission and being sick, too, I just really missed seeing one of those little paintings again in the midst of things. After all, I'm an artist !, not a web builder/designer/writer/marketer/business woman extraordinaire!

A Day In The Life of An Artist.....

Well, as they say, you make plans and then life happens.

This seems to have been the case for me in the past couple of weeks. I worked so hard and with such enthusiasm preparing my beautiful linen supports. They are now curing in my studio and will be ready to paint on next week. This week I had admirable intentions of doing some little paintings for my blog, or even posting some of my larger works which are on-going in my studio, when I came down with that nasty flu. You know the one, 'that nasty one'. My friend, Lori Jay, just back from Greece and the UK, warned me about it, but too late. So, I have been down for the count this past week. Such is life.

But, the upside to being horizontal for the better part of this week is that I am now feeling refreshed and more excited than ever to get back to easelling. It's not easy to take time away from the studio but it's never a bad thing, one way or another. Particularly, since I have agreed to take on an exciting commission for a client. Since its being handled through an advertising agency, it's all a bit hush hush ... I'll tell you about it when I'm able. Perhaps that will be when the painting is finished. This will also mean that my concentration and focus will be on bringing this commission to fruition.....if you don't hear from me for a bit, you'll understand why.

Applying the first coat of lead oil primer...Apply a coat of lead oil primer thinned with turps using a palette knife. Keep the coat thin enough to fill in the weave but allowing the weave to be visible. Allow this primer to dry over several days. Gently sand (wearing a mask, preferably outdoors). When dry, apply a second coat of oil lead primer, again keeping the coat thin enough to fill in the weave but allowing the weave to be visible. Allow this to dry for two weeks before painting on the surface. Note: I apply one coat of primer to the edges.

It's been awhile since I've posted a new 'Daily Painting' .... as a full-time painter, it was always my desire to paint one little masterpiece each week, while working on my larger works. But, sometimes it just doesn't work out that way and here's one of the reasons why. I am one of those hands-on artists who savours every part of this creative process. I guess it's because it is so satisfying to be able to work with one's hands, be it carpentry, gardening or whatever. I have always built my own canvases and keep an assortment of different sized stretcher bars on hand at all times. I give my oil primed canvases another coat of lead primer so that I have my surfaces just the way I like them. Recently, my friend, artist Lisa Humes, visited me from Florida and brought with her some incredibly beautiful Utrecht raw linen as a gift. So, this weekend was spent not only stretching the raw linen onto stretcher bars, but preparing the supports with rabbit skin glue before priming them with an oil based primer. The photo above shows the process of applying rsg. After two coats of this over a few days, I will then prime the surface with oil lead primer, again preparing the surface to my idea of perfection. It's necessary to wait for a few weeks to paint on them, but it's so worth it. Please check my 'Dunlop Demonstrations' site to see the stages...hope to post them soon, as I do them. Couldn't resist these little panels that I prepared last week specially for my Daily Paintings....the linen is beautiful, quality Fredrix oil primed linen and I've applied another coat of lead primer to make the surface just the way I like it. It's fiddly, but I find it so satisfying to prepare this linen and build my canvases myself....and it's heaven to work on. I pushed this painting as far as I could in one day...I like to work on a dry surface the second day. This first stage is full of possibilities, many of which I will discover as I apply pieces of paint over the dry tomorrow. This painting was inspired by my artist buddy, Joey Iantorno. Joey is an amazing artist, and person, living in Anaheim, CA. Although we live in different countries we manage to compare notes and inspire one another. The artist's life can be a rather isolated one, by choice, therefore meaningful friendships are forged and boundaries become seamless. This one is for Joey. Hope to complete it tomorrow, Joey.

I've been away from the Daily Painting recently....busy working to complete a portrait of my Mom and also a few other larger pieces. The surface I work on is of utmost importance to me, so I've been experimenting with preparing surfaces for these little mini-masterpieces. I've got some beautifully primed linen mounted panels, which I've made myself, ready to go and I can hardly wait to try them out...so I expect to get back to the little ones soon!

It's been a busy week and I'm back to the mini-paintings once again! My good friend, artist Lisa Fourcade-Humes, visited me from Florida....her first visit to Canada so it was pretty exciting to have her here with me. A trip to Alberta wouldn't be complete, however, without a drive into Banff National Park and the spectacular Canadian Rockies....I live so close to them, but this sight can still take ones breath away. I love to paint eggs, you might have noticed. They are incredibly beautiful to sculpt with paint and very hard to do. I guess I like the challenge. The little brass dish is a sophisticated contrast.....and the tube of paint, well, just couldn't resist it either. An Eucalyptus branch is the finishing touch.

This painting of 3 beautiful tulips was fun to do.....tulips are among my favorite flowers and I seem to choose to paint them a lot. I started this painting prior to my trip and couldn't resist putting some finishing touches on the flowers today...it's tough for me to do them justice in one single sitting.
